From reducing stress and muscle pain to lowering your heart rate, improving circulation, and even improving your immune system, there are several benefits to having regular massages. You have finally booked your first session with a professional and are not sure what you need to ask, how to act, or especially what to expect. Here are a few of the things you can expect to occur during your first massage.

Checking In and Filling Out Paperwork

Typically, depending upon where you are having the massage performed, you will be expected to check in with the massage therapist or at the salon or massage center and fill out paperwork. The paperwork will vary depending upon your needs or if you are receiving the massages for medical purposes with a massage therapist.

You will also be asked several questions, including if you have any specific medical concerns or if there are any areas you want the technician to focus on. For example, if you have chronic lower back pain, the technician can focus on this area to help you find relief. If you are visiting a massage therapist, the therapist might ask about your medical history, including any recent surgeries or injuries, and about your family's medical history.

Preparing For the Massage

Dress comfortably and allow plenty of time to get to the office or salon. In addition to filling out paperwork, giving yourself extra time to reach the office will ensure you are not stressed or rushed. These negative feelings can impact your ability to relax and receive the full benefits from the massage.

The massage therapist or technician will tell you what to expect during the massage and discuss your level of comfort. For instance, depending upon the type of massage, you might be expected to remove your clothing, or you may be allowed to keep some pieces of clothing on, such as your pants.

During the Massage

First and foremost, make sure to relax and tell the massage technician or therapist when you are experiencing severe discomfort or do not feel comfortable with the process. During the massage, you will be asked to lie in different positions while the technician or therapist uses a variety of techniques, such as kneading, gliding, holding, friction, and percussion to help you relax, find relief from everyday aches and pains, and treat certain conditions.

Preparing for your first massage can be difficult, especially if you really do not know what to expect. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact your massage technician or therapist.
